Starling OSC3

Combining a trio of oscillators, OSC3 from Starling is inspired by classic mono synths, with some unique features added. Tune Oscillator 1 using the coarse and fine tune controls—Oscillators 2 and 3 can then be detuned and spread from Oscillator 1's base frequency. Four detuning modes are available: even, scaled, chord, or clock.

These oscillators have a selection of waveshapes, including triangle, sawtooth, trapezoid, and square. Quantize the oscillators to equally tempered scales, with options for semitone, major, or minor quantization. The 1V/oct input affects all oscillators equally, and has a range of +/-5V. Oscillator 2 and 3's phase can also be modulated, which can lead to some particularly interesting results with audio rate sources. An octave gate input provides a simple way to offset the pitch of the oscillators by an octave using a gate sigal, while the unity input snaps oscillators 2 and 3 back to the center frequency of oscillator 1.

Oscillator 1 has its own dedicated output, while 2 and 3 are sent to a VCA section, which can scale their outputs with the attenuators and external CV. The Beat output is created by the heterodyning between oscillators 2 and 3, with more beating as the difference in pitch of the two oscillators increases. This triple oscillator is incredibly musical in its performance, with lush and harmonically pleasant sounds that sit well in a mix. And of course, because OSC3 is based on Starling's VIA platform, you can completely change its behavior by loading in one of the many alternative firmwares.
