Rossum Electro-Music was founded by veteran synthesizer/software designer Dave Rossum, co-founder of E-mu Systems. There, Rossum led the development team that produced the premiere professional modular system, the E-mu Modular System, which integrated analog designs and digital technology to construct the first digital polyphonic synthesizer keyboard alongside the first modular digital sequencer and the first microprocessor-based polyphonic keyboard/sequencer.

After the release of the now-coveted E-mu Modular System, Rossum started working on an affordable-but-professional digital sampler that came to be known as the Emulator. This design was succeeded by the Emulator II, which quickly established sampling as the most desirable music technology and became a staple in studios around the world. Subsequently, E-mu released a slew of legendary products, including the SP-12 and SP-1200 samplers/drum machines and the Morpheus Z-Plane Synthesizer. Years later, this latter device was reincarnated as a Eurorack module: the Morpheus Z-Plane Filter. The Eurorack version of the Morpheus filter deploys the original functionality as it was originally intended, using CV to transcend the technological constraints that substantially limited the original.

Today, Rossum Electro-Music is focused on developing products for the Eurorack modular format, where they are pushing just as many boundaries as they did decades prior. Indeed, their Morpheus and Control Forge modules have effectively changed the game, opening up possibilities that simply did not exist prior to their initial release.
