Meng Qi Wing Pinger
Blurring the boundaries between generative and deterministic design, the Wing Pinger from Meng Qi is an analog desktop filter percussion synthesizer capable of everything from sweet plucky melodies to clangorous noise and chaotic behaviors. At its core, the Wing Pinger features two resonant filters which can be 'pinged' to produce characterful percussive effects, and which are both connected in a chaotic feedback FM loop with a shift register—the extent to which this loop affects each filter's cutoff can be determined by the user. As much a percussion instrument as it is a drone machine, with the Wing Pinger the performer can be as involved in this process as they wish thanks to the precisely tuned parameter control knobs and touch keyboard. At sufficiently high resonance settings the two filters can begin to oscillate and interact in surprising ways, turning the Wing Pinger into an autonomous soundmaker.
With the audio input, pretty much anything can be pinged, from spoken word samples to drum loops, and with extensive MIDI and CV implementation, the Wing Pinger is ready to interface with the rest of the studio with aplomb. The Wing Pinger is a powerful and unusual analog synthesizer, sure to add an unpredictable, charming liveliness to your studio.
