33 1/3 J Dilla’s Donuts
Released on his 32nd birthday and three days before his death, J Dilla's Donuts is the second and last album released during his lifetime. Composed in a hospital bed, Donuts' samples and melodies tell the story of a man coming to terms with his declining health and a final love letter to the friends and family he was leaving. Breaking out of the confines of traditional hip-hop, the album is genre-spanning romp from noisy to beautiful and back again. Jordan Ferguson draws from philosophy, critical theory, and musicology; and outlines how the album is an example of what scholars call "late style," a tradition that goes back centuries.
